The enigmatic watchword of Candie, everything in reverse’ suggests that wise men, like shrimps, occasionally go forward by moving backwards.
In 1334, the Château became the property of the Candie family, who gave the castle their name when Rolet Candie swore allegiance to the kingdom with Mars and Aimon.
Of courtly origin, and close to the the House of Savoie, the Candies were one of the oldest and richest families in Chambéry. When the line died out in the 15th century, the chateau became the property of Senator Pierre Juge, then of Berliet, Archbishop of the Tarentaise region.
A few years later, the castle was sold on to a Chambéry businessman of Piedmontese origin.
Sardinians of Candie were knighted in 1598, and kept possession of the castle for almost 3 centuries. The last of the line, Henri-François Joseph (1750-1827) a cavalry officer in the Sardinian army became Baron of Candie in 1790.
In 1839, the castle was belonged to the Marquise of Tredicini, and then was taken over by Gaston Vasseur in 1920, and by Didier Lhosis in 1990.
This highly talented collector of antiques undertook spectacular renovation work and transformed the castle into a superb hotel and restaurant. The Compagnie des Hotels has pursued this renovation work with identical passion since 2006.
